Things I would like to see on my Linux (Ubunu) system

Mostly this list include things I can live with, but I consider them, anyway, an enhancement to the current system, thinking on the millions of people that could be saving time and efforts with them. Please, add as many comments as you would like. Think that some of them can be included here.

System

  • Better disk device management and integration with removable devices. Sometimes I could not get to unmount a NTFS volume from i.e gparted, the system would mount it again every time I try to unmount it. If I issue sudo umount /media/myMedia Gnome doesn't seems to know the volume have been unmounted and I can go inside that folder and, of course, nothing is there 'cause it has been unmounted already... This is somehow confusing.
    • disks-admin: When writing manually the Access path why can't it create the folder automatically?
    • permissions, permissions. This could be easier for the newbie (ie 'newbie' meets 'disk' group)
  • Better support for WI-FI cards (including mine (: ). Currently Ubuntu uses my card on "eth1". Network panel shows it as a wired connection.
  • Multi-display & TV OUT support and easy management. Of course, this depends heavily on the graphic card.
  • Better multi-sound-card setups and management. Currently I can not use my Edirol UA-25 as the default system sound output.

Cosmetic (mainly Gnome things)

  • System feedback! KDE does it! :) When running an application, does you know when you have pressed double-clic and it is starting (besides the "Starting App" on the panel)?
  • Open file dialog:
    • Why the buttons doesn't change to a location text line as on the standart nautilus file manager? If I press Ctrl+L on such dialogs (the same as pressing the first upper button on the left), a new text line appears, instead of changing the location buttons for the text lines..
    • Why on this dialog I can not easily see the Size or the Owner fields?
  • Drag&drop to a window moves/copies the file. Now I have to drop it on the files area, instead of allowing me to drop it on whatever part of the window (on the title bar, for instance).
  • Multiple copy/move operations stacked on one window (as an option). A la Mac OS X.
  • Widely ESC key (default Cancel button) support. Faster than a two-key keystroke.
Program-specific
  • Nautilus:
    • Better selection box handling with mouse.
    • Creating a link
      • on non writable partitions could pop up a Link creation dialog to create the link on other (writeable) folder
      • with the mouse by right-click-dragging (ala KDE)
  • gparted GUI: Allow mounting partitions like disks admin
  • Gaim: The "Accounts" window should include a column (State?) and it should be updated on connecting, and so on.

Other things
  • Easy yakuake install
